Trump Appoints ‘Border Czar’ to Oversee Largest Deportation Operation in U.S. History

With the appointment of Tom Homan as “border czar,” Trump sets the stage for an unprecedented crackdown on immigration in the United States. Known for his hardline stance on immigration, Homan, a former ICE director, is entrusted with managing the deportation of undocumented migrants—a move Trump asserts will be the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, kicking off on day one of his presidency. This role, notably, bypasses Senate confirmation, giving Homan immediate authority.

Trump’s rhetoric paints immigration as a national threat, often linking migrants to crime despite contrary evidence showing that immigrants are generally less likely to commit violent crimes. His approach, including plans to deploy the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 for sweeping deportations, has already sparked concerns among humanitarian groups. The operation, named “Operation Aurora,” promises to expel migrant “gangs,” with ICE targeting specific individuals in an approach Homan claims will be “humane” and “precisely planned.”

Critics warn that such aggressive policies could deepen the humanitarian crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, identified by the United Nations as the world’s deadliest land migration route. Nevertheless, Trump’s statements signal an impending shift for millions of undocumented migrants, who may soon find themselves under the shadow of heightened deportation threats if Trump returns to the White House.
