New Branch of Ofpra Opens in Mayotte

As of October 24, 2022, a branch of the French Office of Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (Ofpra) is now operational in Mayotte, a French overseas territory. The news was officially announced on the Ofpra’s website on November 29, 2022.

The asylum applications filed in this territory will henceforth follow the procedure laid out in Decree No. 2022-211 of February 18, 2022. This decree adapts certain provisions related to the processing of asylum applications in Mayotte and amends the applicable provisions in Guadeloupe, Guyana, and Martinique.

To file an asylum application in Mayotte, one must first visit the unique counter in Mamoudzou. An asylum application form along with an asylum application certificate will be issued here. From the day the form is issued by the prefecture, the applicant has seven days to complete and personally submit it at the Ofpra premises (Grande Terre), in Mamoudzou. The address for submission is provided on the application form.
Upon submission, the following documents will be issued to the applicant:
- An introduction letter, which proves that an asylum application has been filed with Ofpra and that the application is currently under review.
- An invitation for an asylum application interview.
- An invitation for the handover of the decision.
