New Branch Opens in Mayotte

As of October 24, a new branch of the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons (Ofpra) has been established in Mayotte. The asylum applications filed in this region will now follow the procedure outlined in Decree No. 2022-211 of February 18, 2022, adapting certain provisions related to the processing of asylum requests in Mayotte and correcting the applicable provisions in Guadeloupe, Guyana, and Martinique.

To file an asylum request in Mayotte, individuals must first visit the single counter in Mamoudzou. An asylum request form will be provided, along with an asylum request certification. From the day the prefecture issues this form, individuals have seven days to complete and hand-deliver it to the Ofpra offices (Grande Terre) in Mamoudzou, the address of which is provided on the form.

Upon submission, several documents will be provided including an introductory letter proving that an asylum request has been filed with Ofpra and is currently under review, an invitation for an asylum request interview, and a summons for the hand-delivery of the decision.
