Panama has rolled out significant changes in its immigration policies that could make life easier for some travelers while reinforcing strict control measures for others. Starting October 28, 2024, nationals from several countries can now enter Panama without a tourist visa if they hold a valid visa from select countries, including the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom. Previously, these visas had to meet certain conditions, but now only the validity is required. This update is part of Executive Decree No. 196.

There’s also a 50% fine reduction available for those looking to regularize their immigration status. This measure, effective from August 1, 2024, until July 31, 2025, encourages foreign nationals to formalize their status without fearing hefty penalties.

Additionally, the deadline for extending expired residence permits has been extended until December 31, 2024. This applies to temporary, provisional, and permanent residence permits, as well as domestic worker visas.

Stricter fines for immigration violations have been introduced. Those who illegally enter Panama may face fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the severity of the infraction. Moreover, violators will not be permitted to leave the country until the fines are paid. Special attention is given to those who enter through the Darién jungle, with penalties tailored to individual economic conditions.

Lastly, the transit visa for Cuban nationals, which allows them to stay within the airport’s transit zone for up to 24 hours, has been extended until July 31, 2025.
